Department of Health announces purchase of new radiotherapy machines

The Department of Health has announced it is purchasing 20 new radiotherapy machines at a cost of £30 million.  The purchase of these radiotherapy machines has been carried out by the Department of Health to deliver savings of £3 million to the NHS, as the machines would have cost more had they been bought by hospitals individually.  The Department of Health has said it is the biggest deal it has ever struck for NHS equipment, and is in line with the new NHS procurement strategy.

The new machines can deliver standard radiotherapy and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and Health Minister Earl Howe has said that they will offer patients better access to the “highly effective form of treatment”.  The full press release from the Department of Health can be accessed here.
